NFL Week 5 Previews and Betting Odds

by | Oct 8, 2022 | Football, The Cincy Corner

Week 5 of the NFL kicked off with one of the worst showings of football in a long time. Two teams that should have been better than they are this season, and while it’s surely disappointing for them – we were all forced to watch it. Before we get to this weeks NFL Week 5 betting odds, please allow a small tirade about Amazon Prime having TNF. It’s understandable that the NFL accepted the deal proposed by Amazon Prime to host Thursday Night Football, because they are a business and it was a huge offer. However, there has been blunder after blunder already through five weeks. They didn’t properly handle the Tua injury situation, replaying it over and over. On top of that, the games have just been utter trash – like more than Thursday Night games have always been.

New York Giants (+300) vs Green Bay Packers (-385) – Sunday, 9:30 AM EST

Game Preview

The Green Bay Packers and New York Giants will be meeting in London for an NFC showdown. Both teams are 3-1 and need to win this game to keep pace in their respective divisions.

The Packers are coming off a hard-fought overtime victory against the New England Patriots. Despite the win, it wasn’t the Packers best performance. They let New England control the game at the line of scrimmage and almost lost to the Pats 3rd string quarterback. Green Bay was able to get breakout games out of wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson. Following Davante Adams’ departure to Las Vegas, it will be critical Aaron Rodgers finds a top wideout this year.

Green Bay Packers Notable Injuries: Jaire Alexander (P), Adrian Amos (Q), Devonte Wyatt (Q)

The Giants are 3-1 and Brian Daboll has this team winning despite themselves. Many critics around the league are wondering how this team is 3-1, and the answer is quite simple: Saquon Barkley. On the wide receiver front, Golladay is a bust, Shepard is on IR, and Kadarius Toney is week to week. The Giants defense needs to step up in this one because the offense won’t be able to hang with the Pack. New York hasn’t put up more than 20 points the entire season, which isn’t a sustainable way to win in this league.

New York Giants Notable Injuries: Kadarius Toney (O), Wan’Dale Robinson (O), Kenny Golladay (O), Leonard Williams (Q)

Fantasy Football Tips

New York has one must-start in fantasy and that’s Saquon Barkley. However, Daniel Jones will still complete passes and the most likely recipient of those is Richie James. Grab James if he’s on waivers, and if not and you already own him, throw him in as a flex option.

For Green Bay it’s more complicated, Rodgers and running backs AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones are must-starts. However, with the wide receiving corps, it’s hard to know who will perform and who won’t. Allen Lazard is a safe Flex play but avoid him as your WR1 or WR2.

Giants vs Packers Prediction

This game will come down to whichever defense can play better. It will be the Packers in this one. New York is too banged up and lacking the weapons necessary to give this Packers defense fits. It will be a tight game, but Green Bay will win by a touchdown.

Final Score: Green Bay 24 – Giants 17

Wicked Wager – Full Game u42 (Move the Line with BetRivers to get -124 odds)

Wicked Player Prop – Aaron Rodgers Total Passing Yards Over 232.5 (-114)

Houston Texans (+250) at Jacksonville Jaguars (-320) – Sunday, 1:00 PM EST

Game Preview

The Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars have both overachieved in 2022. The Texans come into this game 0-3-1, while the Jaguars are 2-2 and lead their division.

Let’s repeat, the Jacksonville Jaguars lead their division. To be fair, this is only through four weeks. However, the infusion of a Super Bowl champion head coach seems to have made a difference. In their two wins, the Jaguars trounced their opposition, and in their losses, they were still competitive. The key to this game for the Jaguars will be getting the run game going. Through the first three weeks, James Robinson put up excellent numbers but then fell off in Week 4. The Texans rank in the bottom five in the league in rush defense, which is something Jacksonville will be looking to exploit.

Jacksonville Jaguars Notable Injuries: Zay Jones (O), Foley Fatukasi (Q)

Yes, Houston has overachieved this year. Sure, they are still a winless team, but they’ve been competitive in every game they have played. The wins are going to come for this team, and they still have reason to be hopeful, even if it all isn’t going to come together in 2022. In this matchup, the Texans will need to rely heavily on their 1-2 punch of Dameon Pierce and Brandin Cooks. They need to have a balanced game plan on offense, but the runs and passes should go to those two respectively. The Texans defense will need to shut down Trevor Lawrence and force them to win it on the ground. If they do both above, then they have a chance to snag their first win on the road.

Houston Texans Notable Injuries: Brevin Jordan (O), Austin Deculus (O), Jonathan Greenard (Q)

Fantasy Football Tips

For the Texans, the aforementioned 1-2 punch is a must-start. Aside from those two players, Pierce, and Cooks, there is no one worth starting on the Texans. For Jacksonville on the other hand, there are a multitude of players that are good starts this week. Going against a soft Texans defensive front, James Robinson is a solid RB2, and Travis Etienne is a good flex option. At wide receiver, Christian Kirk’s been a stud through four weeks and should be in a flex position at minimum. This week is a good week to start Trevor Lawrence as he’ll put up good numbers at home.

Texans at Jaguars Prediction

The Texans are a good team, honestly. However, they aren’t as good as the Jaguars, who are the current favorite to win the AFC south. This is a divisional matchup, so for that singular reason it will be a tighter game. However, Jacksonville walks away with win #3.

Final Score: Jacksonville 27 – Houston 17

Wicked Wagers – Jaguars -7 (+110)

Wicked Player Prop – Christian Kirk Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+128)

Pittsburgh Steelers (+600) at Buffalo Bills (-900) – Sunday, 1:00 PM EST

Game Preview

The 3-1 Buffalo Bills will host the 1-3 Pittsburgh Steelers at High Mark Stadium in upstate New York. The Kenny Pickett era is set to officially begin in Buffalo this week as Pickett will be making his first career start. Pickett relieved Mitch Trubisky during the team’s disappointing week 4 loss to the Jets. He ran for two touchdowns but also threw three interceptions. Pickett was able to provide a spark, a spark Mitch Trubisky had failed to bring.

The Steelers have dropped three in a row after stunning the reigning AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1. They’ve also been missing their best player in T.J. Watt on defense. They will need to come into this game with high energy and sharp from kickoff until the final seconds if they want any chance to win. The Buffalo Bills are not the Jets, and the Steelers will need to do a better job of taking care of the football this Sunday.

Pittsburgh Steelers Notable Injuries: TJ Watt (O), Ahkello Witherspoon (O), Cameron Sutton (Q), Terrell Edmunds (Q)

The Bills are exactly the team we thought they were. For the most part, they’ve played exceptionally well this year. Buffalo comes into this one as big favorites. It will be the first time since the 80s that the Steelers are two-touchdown underdogs. Most fans around the league believe that this will be a bloodbath, which is exactly why it won’t be. That’s just the way the 2022 NFL season is playing out. Mike Tomlin is an excellent coach and will have his team ready to play. The Bills will have to play mistake-free football offensively and disrupt Kenny Pickett early.

Buffalo Bills Notable Injuries: Jordan Poyer (O), Dawson Knox (O), Tremaine Edmunds (Q), Von Miller (Q), Gabe Davis (Q)

Fantasy Football Tips

For the Steelers it’s a tough call on if anyone is a must start anymore. Even though he’s put up below average numbers so far this year, Najee Harris is still a running back you need to start. Besides Harris, leave the Steelers players on the bench until proven otherwise.

On the Bills side, there are must starts all over the place. Start their defense this week, even if they are missing Poyer and some others, Pickett is a turnover machine. On the wide receiver front, Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis are a WR1 and WR2 respectively. Lastly, let’s not forget Josh Allen – he’s a QB1 no matter who your options are.

Steelers at Bills Prediction

The Steelers will put up a fight in this one behind good coaching from Mike Tomlin and a little Pickett-mania. However, the Buffalo Bills are the better team, and they will pull away but will not cover the 14-point spread. This is the best NFL Week 5 Betting Odds to bet on this week.

Final Score: Buffalo 30 – Pittsburgh 17

Wicked Wager – Steelers +14 (-109)

Wicked Player Prop – Kenny Pickett Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+525)

Los Angeles Chargers (-125) at Cleveland Browns (+105) – Sunday, 1:00 PM EST

Game Preview

After back-to-back losses in Weeks 2 and 3, including one in Kansas City where quarterback Justin Herbert fractured his ribs, the Chargers are looking to get back above .500 this week. Despite the injury, Herbert threw for 340 yards and 2 TDs last week in the win over Houston and running back Austin Ekeler added 2 more scores on the ground (he also caught one of the touchdowns through the air). This week they will head to Cleveland to take on a Browns’ team also sitting at 2-2.

Los Angeles Chargers Notable Injuries: Keenan Allen (O), Joshua Palmer (Q), Dustin Hopkins (Q)

The Browns have a strong pass defense that has allowed opposing quarterbacks an average passer rating below 90 this season. They will also be happy to welcome back Myles Garrett and hopefully Jadeveon Clowney this week. The Browns’ offense on the other side has been hit or miss, with running back Nick Chubb being the only consistent player. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett has 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the first 4 games and an average passer rating of only 87.1 on the season.

Cleveland Browns Notable Injuries : Taven Bryan (Q), Jerome Ford (IR), Greedy Williams (IR), Jadeveon Clowney (Q)

Fantasy Football Tips

The one-two punch of quarterback Justin Herbert and running back Austin Ekeler are each must-starts for fantasy owners. With Keenan Allen out, look for wide receiver Mike Williams to continue to be effective and tight end Gerald Everett to be a target; he has 16 catches for 2 touchdowns and over 200 yards this season.

On the Browns side, Nick Chubb is a must start and will have another big game if Dameon Pierce’s monster performance over the Chargers’ run defense last week was any indication. Wide receiver Amari Cooper is also worth watching. He has 2 games with 100 yards and a touchdown and two games with less than 20 yards, so playing him is like flipping a coin.

Chargers at Browns Prediction

With the hopes of keeping up with the Chiefs in the division, the Chargers are ready to roll. Expect them to come out looking as strong as they did last week, moving the ball through Herbert’s arm and containing the Cleveland offense enough to leave Ohio with a win. From a betting perspective, Vegas is telling us with these NFL Week 5 betting odds that it’s an even matched game. We shall see.

Final Score: San Diego 30 – Cleveland 20

Wicked Wager – Full Game Over 47 (-110)

Wicked Player Prop Jacoby Brissett Total Passing and Rushing Yards Under 229.5 (-115)

Atlanta Falcons (+360) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-480) – Sunday, 1:00 PM EST

After back-to-back wins for the Falcons and back-to-back losses for the Buccaneers the two teams will face off in Tampa with first place in the NFC South on the line. Although on paper that may look like two teams heading in different directions, that is not the whole story. The Falcons took care of business in Seattle and at home against Cleveland.

Atlanta Falcons Notable Injuries: Cordarelle Patterson (IR), Kyle Pitts (O), Isiah Oliver (IR)

On other side of the ball, the Buccaneers lost to Green Bay and Kansas City. They also had to play the game against the Packers without Tom Brady’s top two targets. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin returned last week, and each had 10 targets. Evans caught 8 passes for 100 yards and 2 TDs against Kansas City and although Godwin only had 60 yards, his presence definitely opened up the field for Brady. Atlanta won last week primarily on the ground game but will be without veteran Cordarrelle Patterson in Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Notable Injuries: Cameron Brate (O), Akiem Hicks (O), Julio Jones (Q), Logan Ryan (O)

Fantasy Football Tips

Although the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady does not always reward in the world of fantasy football. This week, he will be a must start coming off a game where he threw for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns. His receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are also must-starts, especially with Cameron Brate and Julio Jones banged up. Expect this one-sided game to also favor Tampa Bay’s defense, which has 6 interceptions, 14 sacks, and an average 17 points against this season

There is value on the Atlanta side as well. The two running backs, Huntley and Allgeier have shown the ability to put up points in fantasy. Additionally, rookie wide receiver Drake London is a smart start this week.

Falcons at Buccaneers Prediction

Despite having yet to win at home this season, it is hard to pick against Tom Brady when he’s going up against Marcus Mariota. The Buccaneers have too many targets on offense, and the Falcons will be missing their starting running back and tight end.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 31 – Atlanta 14

Wicked Wager – Buccaneers -13.5 (+131)

Wicked Player Prop – Mike Evans Longest Reception over 21.5 yards (-120)

Miami Dolphins (-178) at New York Jets (+150) – Sunday, 1:00 PM EST

Game Preview

The race in the AFC East is heating up. This matchup in Week 5 will feature Miami backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater against Jets second year quarterback Zach Wilson. Last week Bridgewater was forced into action after a scary injury to Tua Tagovailoa. Most of Bridgewater’s success came when he targeted Tyreek Hill, who finished with 160 yards on 10 catches. This week he will face a Jets defense that has been strong against the pass, allowing an 88.3 average passer rating through the first 4 weeks.

Miami Dolphins Notable Injuries: Tyreek Hill (Q), Jaylen Waddle (Q), Xavien Howard (Q)

The Jets come off a win against Pittsburgh where Zach Wilson was not spectacular but didn’t need to be. He threw for 250 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in his season debut while also catching a touchdown. The Jets will look to make more plays against a Miami pass defense that has been less effective and may be missing cornerback Xavien Howard.

New York Jets Notable Injuries: Vinny Curry (IR), Duane Brown (IR), Quincy Williams (O), Max Mitchell (O)

Fantasy Football Tips

No matter who is throwing the ball, Miami wide receiver Tyreek Hill is a must start. He always has the potential for big plays and will be Bridgewater’s main target all game. Dolphins’ receiver Jaylen Waddle was quiet last week with Bridgewater throwing so he is worth starting this week if needed but might be worth sitting for any team with other quality guys at this position.

This is a good game to use a kicker from. Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein is 7 for 8 on field goals this season with his longest coming from 57 yards. The running backs Breece Hall and Michael Carter are also must starts in this offense.

Dolphins at Jets Prediction

This game won’t be traditional when it comes to the play calling. Last week the Jets were not afraid to run a double end around that ended with quarterback Zach Wilson catching a touchdown and will likely be coming with more plays like this. New York’s defense will ultimately be too much for Miami’s banged up offense to overcome, sending the Jets above .500 for the first time since 2018.

Final Score: New York 16 – Miami 10

Wicked Wager – Full Game Under 45 (-110)

Wicked Player Prop – Garrett Wilson Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+245)

Tennessee Titans (-110) at Washington Commanders (-110) – 1:00 PM EST

Game Preview

This matchup is between two teams that started differently then how fans expected, but have begun moving towards the truth. Washington won its first matchup of the year over Jacksonville but have since lost 3 in a row. As the year’s gone on the Commanders offense has gotten worse, scoring a combined 18 points over their last two games. Quarterback Carson Wentz had a 101 passer rating in the Week 1 victory. In the losses Wentz has had 99.6, 71.0, and 56.7 passer ratings. Wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel have not scored in the past two games and the defense will be tasked with stopping Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry.

Washington Commanders Notable Injuries: Johan Dotson (O), Logan Thomas (Q), Percy Butler (O)

Tennessee started off the season with two losses, including a 41-7 loss to Buffalo in Week 2 where Tannehill had 117 yards and 2 interceptions, and Henry was shut down. Since that game the Titans are 2-0. Tannehill’s thrown for 3 touchdowns and one interception and Henry’s had 200 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in those wins. The defense is not spectacular. They allowed Matt Ryan to throw for over 350 yards and two scores last week, but will be looking to improve as they go up against Carson Wentz.

Tennessee Titans Notable Injuries: Bud Dupree (O), Lonnie Johnson (Q), Zach Cunningham (O)

Fantasy Football Tips

After a week where he ran for over 100 yards and a touchdown, Derrick Henry is once again a must start. He’s also added 90 yards receiving this year and will be looking to rack up more points in this game. Tennessee will be trying to spread the ball through the air and Washington’s offense may not show up so there won’t be many other players worth starting. If a defense is needed Tennessee’s has 3 interceptions and 10 sacks on the season is not a bad option. They should finish with a few points above their projection in Week 5.

Titans at Commanders Prediction

This will be the Titans last game before their bye. They will have to come back to two divisional matchups and a game against Kansas City following their bye. They should be able to take care of business against the Commanders to keep up in the division.

Final Score: Tennessee 24 – Washington 10

Wicked Wager – Tennessee Alt Spread -9.5 (+250)

Wicked Player Props – Derrick Henry Longest Rush Over 15.5 yards (-120)

San Francisco 49ers (-292) @ Carolina Panthers (+235) – Sunday, 4:05 PM EST

Game Preview

The 49ers will be looking to build on their momentum from Monday night’s victory over the Rams. Week 5’s game against Carolina will be Jimmy Garoppolos’s third start this year. He fared well in his prior one, throwing for 1 touchdown and 0 interceptions. It will be critical that he continues to take care of the football. The Niners defense has been a handful for opposing offenses this year. They’ve given up an NFL-low 46 points through Week 4.

San Francisco 49ers Notable Injuries: Arik Armstead (O), Trent Williams (O),

Baker Mayfield has struggled to begin his tenure with the Panthers. Mayfield has a 54.7% completion percentage so far this year. The Panthers have started 1-3 and their schedule won’t be getting any easier with the Niners, Rams, and Buccaneers upcoming. They’ll also need more production from Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey’s managed to stay healthy but has not been as big of a centerpiece in the offense as what he used to be.

Carolina Panthers Notable Injuries: Laviska Shenault Jr (O), Xavier Woods (Q), Frankie Luvu (Q)

Fantasy Football Tips

Deebo Samuel is coming off a great performance and will be a must-start this week against the Panthers. Christian McCaffrey is still a must-start because of his ability to put up points in the run and pass game. George Kittle is yet to explode since returning from injury, which means he’s due so he could be a good start as well.

49ers at Panthers Prediction

The Niners put together a convincing win in Carolina. Jimmy G will play the best he’s played all year, and Deebo Samuel will explode. Baker Mayfield is going to continue to struggle, and we might start to hear the calls for Sam Darnold.

Final Score: San Francisco 36 – Carolina 16

Wicked Wagers 49ers -6.5 (-110) / Over 39.5 (-110)

Wicked Player Prop  Jimmy Garoppolo Alt Passing Yards 250+ (+188)

Philadelphia Eagles (-5.5) @ Arizona Cardinals (+5.5) – Sunday, 4:25 PM EST

Game Preview

The Eagles come into their matchup in Arizona as the last remaining unbeaten team in the NFL. Jalen Hurts has looked phenomenal so far this year. His offensive weapons of AJ Brown and Devonta Smith have also performed well. Their defense is tied for the league lead in takeaways and will be looking to continue that against the Kyler Murray led Cardinals.

Philadelphia Eagles Notable Injuries: Jake Elliott (O), Jordan Mailata (D), Boston Scott (Q)

The Cardinals are tied with the Eagles and the Cowboys for the least amount of turnovers this year. They will need to continue to take care of the football, as their team has some holes in it. The last time they went up against an explosive offense was Week 1 against Kansas City, and it didn’t go so well. Kliff Kingsbury’s defense has been better since Week 1, but they will be tested again on Sunday.

Arizona Cardinals Notable Injuries: Matt Prater (O), Nick Vigil (O), D.J. Humphries (Q), Rondale Moore (Q), Trayvon Mullen (CB)

Fantasy Football Tips

Jalen Hurts and AJ Brown should be in your lineup this week. Devonta Smith could also be a good WR2/Flex option. Eagles running back Miles Sanders has proven himself as an RB1 this year. The only guy worthy of a start this week on the Cardinals is wide receiver, Marquise Brown.

Eagles at Cardinals Prediction

The Eagles will build a big lead in the first half, but the Cardinals will rally back in the second half. A late TD from Jalen Hurts to Devonta Smith is what seals this game, as the Eagles move to 5-0.

Final Score: Eagles 35 – Cardinals 24

Wicked Wagers – Eagles -5.5 / Over 48.5 (-115)

Wicked Player Prop – DeVonta Smith Anytime Touchdown Scorer (+170)

Dallas Cowboys (+196) @ Los Angeles Rams (-240) – Sunday, 4:25 PM EST

Game Preview

The Cowboys will be looking for their 4th straight win this week against the Rams. It looks as though Cooper Rush will start once again, after Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, said that Dak Prescott was still having issues gripping the ball. Rush has been solid for the Cowboys, and another good performance this Sunday will make things interesting upon Prescott’s return.

Dallas Cowboys Notable Injuries: Dak Prescott (O), CeeDee Lamb (Q), Jordan Lewis (Q), Tony Pollard (Q), Jason Peters (D)

All signs are pointing to a Super Bowl hangover for the Rams. The team has not looked good and will be coming off a tough defeat at the hands of the 49ers. Matthew Stafford has yet to look like the player he was in last year’s postseason. It’s been reported that the Quarterback is dealing with an elbow injury. It’s unknown how much this is affecting him, but he hasn’t looked the same to begin the year.

Los Angeles Rams Notable Injuries: David Long (Q), Taylor Rapp (Q), Jordan Fuller (O)

Fantasy Football Tips

The two wideouts Cooper Kupp and CeeDee Lamb are guys you’ve got to have in your lineup this week. Tyler Higbee and Ezekiel Elliott would each be solid flex options. Matthew Stafford is a better start then Cooper Rush, as the Rams quarterback is more likely to go on a throwing rampage, thus putting up more yards.

Cowboys at Rams Prediction

This game will be tight. The Rams will control the game in the first half, before the Dallas offense finally gets things going in the third quarter. Stafford will turn the ball over a couple times in the second half to give Dallas a short field, and Rush will put on a show to lead his team to victory late in the fourth

Final Score: Cowboys 30 – Rams 24

Wicked Wager –  Over 42.5 Total Points (-105)

Wicked Player PropCooper Rush Over 1.5 Passing Touchdowns (+148)

Cincinnati Bengals (+135) @ Baltimore Ravens (-160) – Sunday, 8:20 PM EST

Game Preview

After a disappointing 0-2 start the Bengals have bounced back by winning their last two, including last Thursday against an unbeaten Dolphins team. Joe Burrow has looked much sharper since throwing 4 INTs in Week 1. Star wideout Ja’Marr Chase has struggled to get going at times but has still been able to put up efficient numbers. The Bengals offense will be tested this week against a stout Ravens defense.

Cincinnati Bengals Notable Injuries: Tee Higgins (Q), Hayden Hurst (Q)

Despite leading the league in turnovers forced and being third in the league in points scored, the Ravens will come into Week 5 with a 2-2 record. Lamar Jackson has been great so far, the problem is the Ravens have blown a couple of games. There is no need to panic yet, but Baltimore will have to be better at closing games out moving forward. They’ll look to start doing so in an AFC North showdown this Sunday.

Baltimore Ravens Notable Injuries: Justin Houston (O), Rashod Bateman (O), Marcus Peters (Q)

Fantasy Football Tips

Fantasy owners will be glued to their TV sets for this one. Each quarterback in the game is a good start. This means the wide receiver cores will be too. Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase need to be in your lineup, while Mark Andrews is a good Tight End/Flex option.

Bengals at Ravens Prediction

This game will be tight through the first half but Baltimore will pull away in the second half. Joe Burrow won’t play his best ball, and Lamar Jackson will move the Ravens to 3-2 and the Bengals back to under .500.

Final Score: Ravens 32 – Bengals 20

Wicked Wager Ravens -3.5 (-104)

Wicked Player Prop Joe Burrow Under 271.5 Passing Yards (-109)
